Question I am just wondering what the legal drinking age in the Dominican republic is?
Answer The official legal age is 18 years old .
What are the Entry and Exit requirements for the Dominican Republic?
For U.S. citizens must have a valid passport for travel to the Dominican Republic. Canadian citizens, a valid passport, or a birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship, along with photo identification, are required for both entry and exit. For Canadians or other nationalities that will be flying to the Dominican Republic via the United States a valid pasport is also required. All tourists must purchase a visa/tourist card at a cost of $10.00 U.S. to enter the Dominican Republic. Canadian travellers are provided with this visa/tourist card before leaving Canada. Visitors who do not obtain a visa/tourist card prior to entry must purchase one at the airport when they arrive in the Dominican Republic. See
There is a departure tax of $20.00 U.S. per person. Canadian or other foreign currencies are not accepted for the departure tax. Some airlines include this tax in your ticket price so check with your airlines.
When children travel to the Dominican Republic with only one parent, or with non-parents, they do not require any special letter of authorization, as long as they leave the DR with the same people they arrived with. (Note that it had previously been indicated that minors traveling with only one parent or non-parents had to have a letter of authorization legalized by the Dominican Consulate. This in fact pertains only to Dominican minors under 18, not to foreign travelers.) I would suggest it is probably a good idea to get something in writing signed by the parent(s) just in case there are any questions.
Children should have their own passport when traveling alone or with non-parents. Birth certificates are only acceptable when traveling with one or both parents and a child is under 13. Children over 13 need a student card along with the birth certificate as photo ID, or a passport. (U.S. citizens or other nationalities flying from the United States will require a passport)
Note: If a minor child is not leaving the Dominican Republic with the same people they arrived with, the parents or legal guardians must provide to the new companion, a letter of consent, legalized at the nearest Dominican Republic Consulate to the parents' residence.
If any further clarification is needed, please contact your nearest Dominican Consulate. You should also verify to see if there are any other requirements of the airline in order to board from your country of origin.
What is the average weather and water temp .like in the DR
Average Water Temperature: Summer - 83 deg Winter - 78 deg
Average High is 87 deg in Fahrenheit Average Low is 73 deg in Fahrenheit
Generally, the temperatures are hot during the day. Many of the days are a mixture of sun and clouds, the clouds being a welcome relief from the hot sun. January is the coldest month, and August is the hottest month of the year . There is no real rainy season in the Dominican Republic how ever some say it rains more often in November and December than other months , it can rain at any time during the year as is such anywhere. Much of the time the rain occurs overnight or as a brief afternoon shower.

What clothing and misc Items should I pack ?
Due to the Dominican Republic's warm, tropical climate, not a lot if you're visiting one of the coastal destinations! Lightweight material shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, bathing suits and sandals are the standard - certainly for during the day. Light pants and jackets are recommended for the evenings, or if you'll be visiting the mountains, especially in the winter months where the temperatures can cool down at night. As the norm for vacation destinations, people tend to dress a little less casually to go out for dinner or to bars, clubs or casinos. Higher end resorts, restaurants and bars, may have a dress code with more specific requirements. Dominicans tend to dress more formally than North Americans. If you are spending time in a larger city, it is recommended to have a nice set of clothing for going out in the evening. A light rain jacket (and/or umbrella) is useful to have in the event of rain showers. If you plan to participate in sporting or adventure activities, such as tennis or horseback riding, a pair of runners/sneakers will definitely be useful to have. The following items are 'recommended' to bring from home. In the event you forget certain items, most Dominican Republic tourism destinations will probably sell most of what you might need, but items may/many not be priced higher than if they were purchased in your home country.
Clothing Bathing/swim suit(s) Shorts Tank tops & T-shirts Hat(s) for sun protection Long pants (for cooler weather and/or protection from mosquitoes) Light jacket, sweater or sweatshirt (for cooler weather) Light rain jacket and/or umbrella
Shoes Comfortable & breathable shoes for walking around Sandals/flip-flops to wear on the beach Dress shoes for evenings out Runners/trainers for sports activities
Toiletries Soap, shampoo & conditioner Toothpaste & toothbrush Waterproof sunscreen/sun block with a high sun protection factor (SPF) SPF lip protection Moisturizer First aid supplies: pain reliever, upset stomach medicine, Band-aids, etc. Any prescription medicines you may need Mosquito/bug repellent Razor/shaving kit Nail clippers/nail file Comb/brush Small hand mirror Towel Extra contact lenses & lens solution (if applicable)
Other Pack a carry-on bag with your necessary items in case your luggage is delayed or lost Passport/Identification (and photocopy of each kept a separate place) Driver's license (and photocopy) if you plan on renting a vehicle Money/Traveler's Checks Travel medical insurance . Camera & rolls of film 110 Volts to 220 Volts adaptor (The Dominican Republic has has a 110 Volts / 60 Hertz system. Visitors from Europe who need to use their electronic equipment such as a battery charger should bring their voltage adaptor) Sunglasses Earplugs (if you are a light sleeper) Spanish-English (or your language) dictionary.
Is there shopping in Puerto Plata where we can find local things ?
There are shopping excursion trips or you can go on your own. You can spend lots of time shopping at carribean street, The sreet is situated in between the Bachata & Merengue hotels, Be sure to haggle you should be able to get at least 25% off the asking price, walk away and you will be called back to pay the price you just offered. You can also hire a cab and go into PP to the Hatian village or the Mercado with local wares at far better prices. In the Hatian village you can buy the items from the local artists/carvers them selves. And Bargin away. You sould pay less the 50% of the original price and at least 25% less then shopping in a tourist joint. Or take the cab to Sosua and Cabarete with lots of local shops, restaurants and bars. In Cabarete stop at the liquidation center (Center of town on the South side away from the ocean side of the street.
What about tipping and taxes in the Dominican Republic ?
Officially There is a 16% sales tax (ITBIS) businesses charge for the sale of their products and/or services. By law, particular establishments, for example hotels and restaurants, are also able to add a 10% service charge. Some businesses include this tax and any service charges in their prices, but some do not, so it would be wise to ask before making your purchase. Many times even if there is a 10% service charge added to your bill, this amount is not provided to the staff that provided you the service. If you feel the service you received deserves extra recognition, it will certainly be appreciated as hourly wages are quite low. The average is about 10% of the total cost of the service for restaurants. For baggage handlers at airports, taxi drivers, hotel cleaning staff, etc., use your own discretion based on the service they provide you. Unofficially most small vendors don't charge tax when you pay in cash so it is advisable to bring plenty of small denomination 1 and 5 dollar bills.

Can I bring back alcohol for my personal use or as a gift?
Yes heres Us Customes regulations
Generally, one liter per person may be entered into the U.S. duty-free by travelers who are 21 or older, although travelers coming from the U.S. Virgin Islands or other Caribbean countries are entitled to more. See our publication, "Know Before You Go" for additional information. Additional quantities may be entered, although they will be subject to duty and IRS taxes. Duty is generally 3% of value and the IRS excise tax is generally between 21-31cents per 750ml bottle of wine, 67 cents/champaigne, and $2.14/ hard liquor. It is not legal for travelers under the age of 21 to import alcohol - even as a gift. The total amount of alcohol you may enter the country with is primarily determined by the laws of the state where you will arrive back into the U.S. Each state's ABC board (or equivalent ) sets the amount of alcohol a person may bring into the state without a license or permit from that state. Travelers must check with the appropriate state ABC board, as the amounts vary from state to state. We regret that we are unable to provide this information, but CBP staff is not able to maintain information about each of the 50 State's various requirements. There is no federal limit on the amount of alcohol a traveler may import into the U.S. for personal use, however, large quantities might raise the suspicion that the importation is for commercial purposes, and a CBP officer could require the importer to obtain an TTB import license (which is required for all commercial importations) before releasing it. If you do intend to travel with a large quantity of alcohol, we suggest you contact the entry branch of the port you will be entering the country through to discuss your situation in advance. Duty rates on alcoholic beverages can be obtained in Chapter 22, "Beverages, Spirits and Vinegar," in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule. Alcoholic beverages purchased in duty-free shops are subject to duty when you bring them with you into the United States.
